The eightieth anniversary of the Italian Republic will be celebrated in Palmanova, at the Caserma Piave, on Tuesday 2 June with an event organized by the ANPI Udine starting at 8:30 p.m. Between 1944 and 1945, the Piave Barracks were the site of a true massacre of partisans—more than 200 victims—tortured and killed by the Germans and the Borsatti gang, which terrorized the Lower Friuli area. The site is intended to become the Regional Museum of the Resistance.
The ceremony—Geme in noi nascosta una ferita e le dà voce il vento della pianura (“A hidden wound lies within us, and the wind of the plain gives it voice”)—will open with speeches by regional and local authorities. The Coro Polifonico di Ruda, which will begin the celebrations by performing Il Canto degli Italiani, will then provide the musical accompaniment to readings selected by Alberto Prelli and performed by the Palmanova historian himself together with Rossana Di Tommaso.
